Great idea. I loved reading Gabrielle Garcia Marcez’s 100 Years Of Solitude because of the repetitions as the generations rolled on and each one was named for the last and they continued the same patterns of behavior. When repetition is done deliberately to achieve a certain efect it can be brilliant. When it is done because of lack of thought, it usually doesn’t work. Good luck with your story.

I thought that the difficult setting in Blue Crystal was the hardest part of writing it; the alien quality of the city was hard to relate to, and difficult to describe well.

Personally, I think it’s less of the characters and more of the relationships of said characters that provide familiarity. Characters without action are static things– perhaps appealing, but not the drawing force of a story.

Yeah, I was wondering how obvious that’d be. I really enjoy Perdido Street Station despite the unwieldy prose, but The Scar is definitely my favorite book of his.

I want to pull a more hardboiled feel into the mix, though, so I’m currently reading a lot of detective and noir fiction. And one of these damn days I’ll have to read Gibson’s Neuromancer.
