I feel much better about this reworked version. Although now the blotch of background by the head makes the skull look lopsided…

Blargh, didn’t have time to scan this yesterday. Not sure about this one; something is bugging me, and I think it’s the background. It needs to be toned down to make the figure pop a little more. Watercolor, around one hour. Reference used.

A quick sketch to figure out what a character looks like. Kind of wonky, but I do like how the hair came out. Pencil, about 15 minutes.

More flesh tone practice. The hand looks odd compared with the arm angle because the model in the reference photo leaned on her left arm and held the mask in her right hand. Prismacolor pencils, about 30 minutes.

I’ve done a similar head sketch previously, but I like the hairstyle so much I had to do another one. Sanford ebony pencil, about 15 minutes. Reference used.

This began as a small writing exercise and has now developed into my current WIP novel. After reading some short stories by Angela Carter, I had to try my hand at a richer prose style. And like much of Carter’s work, it involves sex as a pivotal point and catalyst for the events in the story. But it’s not a bodice-ripper, I promise. There are no “flute of love” euphemisms or Fabio-love in my work. I simply can’t write smut well enough to use it in a story.

Just a quick test at flesh tones with colored pencils. About 15 minutes.

This WILL be a watercolor one day, although it was great fun blowing the dust off my Prismacolors. Forgot to scratch in white for the feathers on the left wing…

Colored pencils, reference used, about 30 minutes.

No reference, about ten minutes to sketch and ink. Kind of bad.

Computer problems are solved, and once again art can be uploaded.
